An advantage to LEDs is that they don’t emit ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which is great if illumination printed material or paintings, the light will not degrade them.  LEDs also are useful in the kitchen because they don’t attract insects.  The flicker of florescents is also removed which could cause migrane headaches.

Environmentally, LEDs are way ahead of conventional lighting systems. They don’t include toxic chemicals such as mercury, which can be found in fluorescent lights, nor do they rely on filaments or combustible gases to produce light. They also are manufactured from materials that can be recycled.

#1Reliability

As you may or may not know, LED lighting is actually decades old.  Which bears the question, why is LED lighting taking flight now? The answer is simple: reliability. Early LED lamps were plagued with a number of technical issues including overheating, quick deterioration of light quality, and early burnout.

Thankfully, engineers have spent the last couple of decade tinkering and perfecting LED lamp design. Modern LED lamps now have exceptionally long lives, high tech heat sinks to avoid overheating, and high quality light output for a longer period of time. #2 Efficiency & Longevity

A combination of tighter wallets, government legislation, and interest in green technology has directed customers to energy efficient lighting. LEDs are particularly appealing for two reasons.

Like CFLs and even Halogen lighting, LED lamps give you more light for less energy.  An easy way to calculate this is LPW or lumens per watt. While an incandescent lamp may have need 120 watts to produce 1200 lumens (about 10 LPW), TCP Elite PARs can produce the same amount of light with 17 watts (about 70 LPW).  That 60 LPW difference makes a huge impact on energy bills.

Of course there are other efficient technologies like CFLs and Halogen. But, LED lighting lasts far longer.  Quality CFLs may last 12,000 hours but great LEDs will last over 50,000 hours.  With impressive efficiency and longevity LED lighting is poised to be “the” energy efficient technology.

Some lighting technologies have limitations whether it’s in application, color temperature, or design.  LEDs don’t have those problems.
